Chenango Forks is the two-time defending Class C state football champion for a reason.

Oneonta High gave up the first 55 points in its Section Four Football Conference season opener Friday night as the Yellowjackets fell, 55-8, to the Blue Devils.

LJ Watson ran for three touchdowns and Cody Lamond had two for Chenango Forks, which also won a pair of Class B state championships, in 2003 and 2004.

"Chenango Forks is a very good team," OHS coach John Mushtare said. "When you play good teams, you gotta do everything right."

Watson opened the scoring 1 minute, 53 seconds into the season opener for both teams with a 36-yard touchdown run. Kicker Tony Silvanic followed with the first of his seven extra points as the Blue Devils took a 7-0 lead.

Silvanic made two more extra points in the first quarter, following a 6-yard TD run by Watson and an 8-yard scoring run by Lamond. The latter came with no time left in the opening period as OHS trailed, 21-0.

Lamond had TD runs of 1 and 10 yards in the second quarter, which featured a 29-yard TD run by Watson as the half closed with the Blue Devils ahead, 41-0.

Chenango Forks pushed its advantage to 55-0 in the third quarter with the help of TD runs by Tim McDonald (20 yards) and Seth Bush (42 yards).

The Yellowjackets broke through early in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Jake Crotser scored on a 1-yard run with 9:40 remaining, and Pat Calhoun converted the ensuing two-point conversion run for the final margin.

"We are young and we will go back and get ready for next week," said Mushtare, whose team visits Waverly in Week 2
