Waverly be-Deviled in homecoming game

GIFFORD WOLCOTT--For the Evening Times

WAVERLY -- The Waverly Wolverines played host to the Blue Devils of Chenango Forks at Memorial stadium Friday night.

The Blue Devils, ranked first in Class B in the latest New York State Sportswriters Association poll, scored early and often to rout the homestanding Wolverines 42-6 and spoil homecoming.

Waverly opened on offense and tried a bit of trickery at the outset. The first offensive snap appeared to be a halfback option pass which turned into a nightmare when the ball was fumbled and returned by Forks' Ben Farnham for a 15-yard touchdown.

Tim Batty added the extra point and Forks grabbed a 7-0 lead with only 7 seconds expired.

Chenango used a busload of runners over the next four quarters to produce 39 rush attempts and 241 yards.

Chenango quarterback Tim Batty scored on an 8-yard run with 7:59 to go in the first. Batty's attempt at the kick was wide and Forks led 13-0. Shortly thereafter, quarterback Batty again raced 29 yards to the end zone for his second score of the night. Chenango's Joe Babcock plowed in for the two-point conversion, pushing the score to 21-0 with four minutes left in the first.

On the first play of the second quarter Forks struck again on a 1-yard TD plunge by Matt Stephens. Batty added the boot to extend the lead to 28-0.

The Devil's Ben Farnham scored his first offensive TD with 8:08 left in the second on a 1-yard run. Batty added the point and Forks led 35-0.

Chenango's scoring barrage ended with 56 seconds to go before a rather entertaining halftime show when Pat Hamlin raced 20 yards to paydirt to end the scoring for the Devils. Batty added his final PAT and the Devils led 42-0 at the half.

In the second half the Devils chose playing time over points, emptying their bench.

In a second half that sped by quickly Waverly held the ball on a 15-play drive that featured determined running by Waverly's Nate Harvey, who cracked the goal line with 4:41 to play in the game. The attempt at the 2-point conversion was stopped and the score ended 42-6.

Harvey led Waverly's offense with 61 rushing yards.
